Touch the Textile

Date / 2022
Textiles surround us every day. But what if, instead of remaining flat surfaces, they introduced greater tactility into everyday life through distinctive texture?

This project investigates the elements of weaving technique in relation to textile tactility in order to maximise haptic expression. In weaving, bindings, yarn quality, weave structure, and finishing processes all play an important role in creating tactile sensations centred on texture.

The project explores the design possibilities and potential of producing a wide range of smooth-to-rough textures through weaving, with particular attention to haptic perception. The exploration of texture, together with other haptic qualities such as shape, form, scale, and colour, has been translated into a collection of textile objects designed for different types of interaction.
